James Gilbert Hoyle 1880-1965

James Gilbert and Ollie Belle Smith-Hoyle

James Gilbert Hoyle was born February 16th, 1881 in Swain County, North Carolina to Jacob Leonard Hoyle (1840-1891) and Olive Lucinda Crawford-Hoyle (1850-1929).

The census of 1890 was destroyed by fire. The only part to survive for North Carolina was the census taken in; South Point Township, Riverbend Township and township #2 in Cleveland County.

On June 1st, 1900 we find James on page 1, line 37 of the Federal Census living in his mother's (Olife L. Hoyle) household in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. At the time of the census he was 15 years old and was born in February of 1885 in North Carolina.

On May 9th, 1910 we find James on page 18b, line 53 of the Federal Census living in his mother's (Lucindiy Hoyles) household in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. At the time of the census he is 24 years old, single and was born in North Carolina and worked as a laborer in Tan Barking.

He went on to marry Ollie Bell Smith (1892-1966) on June 2nd, 1912 in Valleytown, Cherokee County, North Carolina.
 

Ollie was born on January 13th, 1892 in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina to Martin Vanburen Smith (1863-1913) and Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hardin-Smith (1863-1935).

On June 4th, 1900 we find Ollie on page 2b, line 68 of the Federal Census living in her father's (Martin V. Smith) household in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. At the time of the census Ollie is 7 years old, was born in January of 1893 in North Carolina.

On April 21st, 1910 we find Ollie on page 12b, line 62 of the Federal Census living in her father's (Martin Smith) household in Greenville, Greenville County, North Carolina. At the time of the census Ollie is 18 years old, single, was born in North Carolina and is working in a cotton mill.

The Hoyle Sisters: Ruby, Gladys and Cornelia

On June 10th, 1913 their first child, Ruby Elizabeth Hoyle was born in Valleytown, Cherokee County, North Carolina. She went on to marry William Bert Thomas Sr. (1906-1972).From this union at least 3 children were born; William Bert Jr. 1929-1985 (Francis Louise Turner 1931-2009), Violet Elizabeth 1932-1993 (Harry Wiggins Jr and James Felix McKnight 1924-2010) and Troy Edward 1935-2007 (Nancy Carol Hawkins 1946-1986). On April 11th, 2012 Ruby died in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 99 years old!

On October 23rd, 1914 their second child, Gladys Mary Hoyle was born in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. She mothered 3 children by Thomas Synder; Robert "Bobby" Edward 1939-2016 (Reola), Gary Allen 1945-1999 (Charlene Webb) and 1 child still living. Gladys went on to marry Charles Frelo Davis (1908-1975) on August 14th, 1949 in York County, South Carolina. From this union 2 children were born both still living. On November 4th, 2005 Gladys died in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 91 years old.

On June 8th, 1917 their third child, Bertha Cornelia Hoyle was born in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. She went on to marry Edward Wayne Hyatt (1913-1984) on January 27th, 1935 in Ringgold, Catoosa County, Georgia. No children were born from this union but a niece who is still living was raised as their own. On February 14th, 2017 Cornelia died in Asheville, Bumcombe County, North Carolina. Just a few months shy of her 100th birthday Aunt Nelia was laid to rest beside her Husband in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler, Buncombe County, North Carolina.

On August 22nd, 1919 their fourth child, Biddie May Hoyle was born in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. She died as an infant.

On July 16th, 1920 their sixth child, Louellen Lockwood Hoyle was born in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. She went on to marry Robert Vernon Bryson (1917-1976). From this union at least 3 children were born; David Joseph "Joe" 1940-2014, Dora Jean 1943-1983, and 1 child still living. On August 16th, 1981 Louellen died in Waynesville, Haywood County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 61 years old.

William and his family

On April 16th, 1923 their seventh child, William Fred Hoyle was born in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. He served along with his younger brother James ray Hoyle in World War II in Germany. While in Germany William Fred Hoyle met and married a wife who is still living on October 25th, 1948. From this union at least 2 children were born; both of which are also still living. On December 11th,1966 William died from injuries sustained in a car crash in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. At the time of his death he was 43 years old.

On January 23rd 1925 their eighth child, Dorthy Jane Hoyle was born in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. She as an infant on July 11th, 1926 in Clover, York County, South Carolina. At the time of her death she was almost 2 years old.

My Grandparents


On August 28th, 1927 their ninth child, James Ray Hoyle (and my grand father) was born in Clover, York County, South Carolina. He served along with his older brother William Fred Hoyle in World War II. He went on to marry Thelma Carrie Blalock (1921-1994) on August 23rd, 1947 in York, York County, South Carolina. From this union 8 children were born; all are currently living. On March 11th, 1994 James died in his home after a brief battle with lung cancer in Stanley, Gaston County, North Carolina. At the time of his death he was 67 years old.

On May 17th, 1932 their tenth child, Carl Gaither Hoyle was born in Valleytown Township, Cherokee County, North Carolina. He went on to marry Shirley Ann Fuller (1942-2014) on February 12th, 1960 in Gaston COunty, North Carolina. From this union at least 2 children were born; both of which are still living. On December 7th, 2003 Carl died in Simpsonville, Greenville County, South Carolina. At the time of his death he was 71 years old.

On December 7th, 1941 our United States of America entered World War II and along with it James Gilbert Hoyle's sons William Fred Hoyle and James Ray Hoyle.  On June 30th, 1942 William Fred Hoyle registered for this draft card in Jackson County, North Carolina.

William Fred Hoyle was the first of James Gilbert's son's to enlist for service on May 25th, 1943 at Camp Croft in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

While in Germany William Fred Hoyle met and married a wife who is still living on October 25th, 1948. It would be almost 10 years before he could bring her to the States to meet his family and settle in Gaston County, North Carolina. On April 16th, 1959 aboard flight 71 from Frankfort, Germany to New York Ms. William Fred Hoyle stepped onto American soil to start a life with a solider from North Carolina.

On April 11th, 1965 James died in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. On April 13th, 1965 he was buried in Armstrong Memorial Cemetery in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. At the time of his death he was 85 years old.

On November 26th, 1966 Ollie died in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. On November 28th, 1966 she was buried in Armstrong Memorial Cemetery in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 74 years old.

  1. As a grandchild to Gill and Ollie Hoyle, I was always in awe of GrandDad (and my GrandMother). The early years were filled with a lot of interaction with both of them as they lived with us for a while. Later on I left Texas (where I was living with my Mother and sister) boarded a bus and came to live with my Grandparents. Those were informative years for me and served to establish the man I am today.
