Olive Lucinda Crawford-Hoyle 1850-1929

Olive Lucinda Crawford was born on February 27th, 1850 in Swain County, North Carolina to William H. Crawford (1822-1902) and Hanna Hemphill-Crawford (1823-1876).

On October 14th, 1850 we find Olive on page 420, line 2 of the Federal Census living in her father's household: "William Crawford" in Haywood County, North Carolina. At the time of the census she was 2years old and was born in North Carolina.

 

 

On July 24th, 1860 we find Olive on page 78, line 9 of the Federal Census living in her father's household; "W. H. Crawford" of Jackson County, North Carolina. At the time of the census Olive is 9 years old.

 

Olive was first married to Benjamin J. Crisp (1848-1876). From Olive's union with Benjamin at least 3 children were born;

On November 6th, 1869 their first child, James Monroe Carver Crisp was born...

On July 29th, 1873 their second child, Samuel Thaddeus Crisp was born in Cherokee County, North Carolina.

On November 3rd, 1876 their third child, Columbus Montival Crisp was born in....

In 1870 we find Benjamin on page 8, line  24 of the Federal Census living in Welch's Township, Macon County, North Carolina.

Benjamin died in 1876 in Jackson County, North Carolina. His current burial location is at this time unknown to me. 


After the death of his first wife Sarah, Jacob was left with the homestead and all 9 of their children. Shortly the following year Jacob remarried to Olive Lucinda Crawford-Crisp (1850-1929) on January 22nd, 1879 in Forney's Creek Township, Swain County, North Carolina.



From Jacob's union with Olive at least 5 children were born;

On October 22nd, 1879 their first child, Mandy Englegrove "Dovie" Hoyle was born in Swain County, North Carolina. She never married but did have 1 child; Garland Hoyle (1898-?) out of wedlock. His father was Joesph Herbert Leatherwood (1854-1937). Mandy was committed to the Broughton Mental Hospital in the late 1950's. In 1861 she died there as a patiet in Morganton, Burke County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 82 years old.

On February 16th, 1880 their second child, James Gilbert Hoyle was born in Swain County, North Carolina. He went on to marry Ollie Bell Smith (1892-1966) on June 2nd, 1912 in Valleytown, Cherokee County, North Carolina. From this union 9 children were born; Ruby Elizabeth 1913-2012 (William Bert Thomas Sr. 1906-1972), Gladys Mary 1914-2005 (Charles Frelo Davis 1908-1975), Bertha Cornelia 1917-living! ( Edward Wayne Hyatt 1913-1984), Biddie May 1919-1920 (Infant), Louellen Lockwood 1920-1981 (Robert Vernon Bryson 1917-1976), William Fred 1923-1966 (Ella Heilmann 1930-?), Dorthy Jane 1925-1926 (Infant), James Ray 1927-1994 (Thelma Carrie Blalock 1921-1994) and Carl Gaither 1932-2003 (Shirley Ann Fuller 1942-2014). On April 11th, 1965 James died in Gastonia, Gaston County, North Carolina. At the time of his death he was 85 years old.

On May 29th, 1882 their third child, Hanna Madgaline "Maggie"  Hoyle was born in Jackson County, North Carolina. She went on to marry James Henry Hicks (1869-1962) on December 4th, 1897 in North Carolina. From this union at least 7 children were born; William Dewey 1899-1952 (Lavada Beaver 1900-1929), Joel Lawton 1900-1957 (Basa Adeline Taylor 1903-1998), Charles S. 1905-1906 (Infant), Culla Mae 1908-1981 (Jess Mathis 1901-1976), Ollie E.  1910-1910 (Infant), Cora Frances 1915-2009 (Thomas Kermit Taylor 1909-1936 and Victor C. Curtis 1888-1980), Elden J. 1918-2007 (Beatrice C. Ledford 1920-2011) and Royal Austin 1921-1980. On March 8th, 1972 Hanna died in Andrews, Cherokee County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 90 years old.

On August 26th, 1887 their fourth child, Roxie Lucinda Hoyle was born in Swain County, North Carolina. She went on to marry Columbus Stradley Burgin (1851-1923). From this union at least 4 children were born; Jannie 1912-?, Caroline Dysart 1915-?, John Wilson 1918-1979 (Mary Lou Pollard 1919-2013) and Un-named Infant 1920-1920. On March 2ed, 1920 Roxie died in McDowell County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 33 years old.

On June 7th, 1891 their fifth child, Lillie Elizabeth Hoyle was born in Swain County, North Carolina. She went on to marry Walter McClain Tatham (1880-1956). From this union at least 6 children were born; Rowland Harold 1914-1994 (Alberta Mae Anderson 1916-2001), Catherine Lucinda 1915-1982 (Penland), Steve William 1919-2006 (Mary Katherine Vick 1922-1998), George Douglas 1923-1997 (Louise Mease 1922-2016) Charles Leslie 1925-1994 (Stella Mae Rogers 1925-1991) and Ruth. On March 19th, 1990 Lillie died in Andrews, Cherokee County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 99 years old.

On June 19th, 1880 we find Jacob on page 194, line 32 of the Federal Census living in Forney's Creek Township, Jackson County, North Carolina.

The census of 1890 was destroyed by fire. The only part to survive for North Carolina was the census taken in; South Point Township, Riverbend Township and township #2 in Cleveland County.

On November 29th, 1891 Jacob died in Swain County, North Carolina. He was buried along side his first wife Sarah in Woody Cemetery in Forney's Creek Township, Swain County, North Carolina. At the time of his death he was 51 years old.

On July 19th, 1929 Olive died in Cherokee County, North Carolina. She was buried in Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews, Haywood County, North Carolina. At the time of her death she was 79 years old.
